Versatility is one of the most prized features in modern-day grills. Gone are the days when a grill was little more than a hot box of charcoal or propane fed flames. Most people feel that if they are going to sink their money into investing in a grill, then they want it to do more than just be able to sear up a Steak or a hamburger on the weekend.

Smoke Hollow attempts to tick every possible box in the grill market with their PS9900 4-in-1 LP Gas Charcoal Grill And Smoker. One side of it is a charcoal grill with an adjustable coal box and dampers. Attached to it is a charcoal-fired offset smoker box, which allows you to use the charcoal cooking chamber to create classic barbecue.

On the other side is a propane fired grill chamber. Next to it is a state-of-the-art infrared burner element that can sear off steaks, lobsters, chops, and other meats that benefit from a quick blast of intense fire. If you happen to have a natural gas supply in your home or outdoor cooking space, Smoke Hollow does offer a natural gas conversion kit, as an accessory purchase.

The porcelain coated cast iron grill grates help maximize heat retention. They also help with easy cleanup.

Construction & Ease of Assembly

One good thing about the Smoke Hollow PS9900 4-in-1 LP Gas Charcoal Grill And Smoker is that the assembly instructions are easy to read. This is pretty rare for a grill this complicated. Most of its competitor’s instructions read like a hieroglyphic transcript of how to build a space shuttle.

On the other hand, this grill is massive, weighing in at almost 220-pounds. It is also very complex, with a lot of parts. It’s definitely the sort of thing you want to recruit a helper for! With two people, some basic tools, and a whole lot of patience, you might be able to get it put together in just under three hours.

The materials used in the Smoke Hollow PS9900 are about on par with the quality components you find in their competitors. The cast iron grill grates with their porcelain coating are nice and top of the line, which is what you would expect for a grill with this price point.

Still, the metal they used in some components feels a little bit thin. If they hadn’t been wise enough to tie the legs together with integrated shelves and cart base, the whole thing would be wobblier than a newborn foal.

Grilling Performance

Outside of a bowl of cold cereal, you would be hard-pressed to come up with something that you can’t cook on the Smoke Hollow PS9900. It offers a charcoal grill, that works in tandem with an offset smoker on one side. On the other side, there is a spacious gas grill, that also has an infrared burner element built into the side table for high heat searing.

The charcoal side of the grill has an adjustable firebox. This allows you to greater heat control for the meat you are preparing. Something like a chicken thigh that benefits from low heat grilling to breakdown collagen into succulent gelatin can then be seared and marked. If you prefer you can also use the infrared burned on the propane side to develop a flavorful crust.

The offset smoker box works nicely with only a few minor smoke leaks. This is endemic with a lot of offset smokers. With this unit, it doesn’t really affect heat control, which is something that can’t be said for some of its competitors!

If there’s a knock on the charcoal grill and offset smoker combination, it’s that you don’t necessarily get a large amount of grilling space. If you want to grill up burgers and brats for a family of four it’s just fine. If you want to smoke a butterflied chicken, you’ve got the space. You could even smoke a big angry pork shoulder. Yet a decent sized brisket may be a little too much for the charcoal side of the PS9900.

The propane side of the grill is a little bit larger and includes a warming rack. It’s there to provide you with the convenience of gas grilling, which it does nicely. When loaded just right you can grill about a dozen decent size hamburger patties. Just don’t plan on trying to double it as a smoker. There’s just not enough room for an accessory smoker box and a large piece of meat.

The infrared side burner in the flip top side table is a nice feature. It’s intended to let you sear off pieces of meat. However, you could use to prepare side dishes. Just make sure that you are using a bottom clad pot or pan, to reduce your chances of scorching whatever you are cooking.

Grilling Areas

The primary grates provide 860 square inches of grilling space. The propane side also includes a 100 square inch warming rack.

Special Features

The infrared side burner is nice for searing off pieces of meat. You could also use a bottom clad pot or pan to prepare side dishes.

The offset smoker box is a nice feature. It’s a pity that the charcoal side isn’t really big enough to smoke a large piece of meat like a brisket or a whole turkey.

Ease to Clean

The features you use will influence just how much work you have to put into cleaning the Smoke Hollow PS9900. The grill grates are enamel coated, which reduces stuck-on material and makes it easy to clean.

The smoker box and the charcoal side have access doors to help clean out ash and spent coals. They are a little on the small side, so make sure to roll up your sleeves before you reach in to clean the back corners.

Warranty

All parts carry a 1-year limited warranty. The paint is guaranteed to be free of defects for up to 90 days except for rust. This is a little bit less than you will find with competitor grills in this class.

Conclusion

If you are looking for a grill that can give you the flavor of charcoal with an offset smoker, while also offering you the convenience of gas when you want it, then the Smoke Hollow PS9900 should be on your list. Just be prepared to spend an entire afternoon putting it together. It’s a pity that they don’t back it with a better warranty.
